I have recently become interested in pursuing a field in either graphic design or advertising design. I was wondering what would be the best path to follow if interested in designing magazine/newspaper ads or billboards..? Your input is greatly appreciated, thanks.

get an internship at a publication or an agency. Work for a couple of months, for free if you have to, in order to make sure you really like it. Then talk to the successful designers you work with as to the path they took. Many these days go to design school while others go to the school of hard knocks. It really depends on what is expected and common in the industry you want to work in.
