How much money can we demand for advertising a banner in our web site?

Well, If our web site will be successful as we think it will, we don't know how much money to demand for advertising, especially for banners.

How much it cost to advertise a banner in Y!A or in yahoo?

How we can know we are not asking too much or the price is too low or too high?

If you haven't even started your website, you can't even compare your rates with that of established websites such as Yahoo. The difference is so wide that it's almost night and day.

Big sites can command rates that are $50 per CPM (cost per impressions), while some I see even goes for $150 CPM (meaning you pay $150 for every 1,000 visitors that see the banner ads). That means that if you buy 100,000 impressions, you will have to pay the site $15,000!

Small sites with no brand name, little to no traffic would be pleased to get rates of $0.15 CPM to $1 CPM. I even see some offering rates as low as $0.05 CPM - which is like scrapping the barrel.

Note that advertisers are looking for:

1. Number of pageviews and unique visitors

2. Who are your traffic and whether your traffic is who they are looking for.

3. How are you measuring the effectiveness of their campaign - do you have a real time statistics that can show them whether their campaigns are being seen and getting clicks

4. How comparable/realistic are your rates compared to similar websites

More than the traffic numbers, #2 or who your audiences are is the key to attracting advertisers. That is what you need to focus on and think of how to get that information. You can run a survey on your site that will allow you to learn who your core audiences are.

In my website which is an information site targeting small and home based entrepreneurs, advertisers often ask us what percentage of our visitors are just thinking of starting a business and what percentage are already running their business. This information cannot be given by any website traffic statistics software. You have to do surveys.

Prepare a media kit containing information about your audience, your advertising packages, rates, and arguments why it is best to advertise on your website
