Why do people believe advertising?

Hahaha, some of you may think I put this question in the wrong category, but really, I mean to see what the whizzes from over here think. I'm actually asking two questions, first of all, does advertising work at all, then the second question is, why. Thanks.

Why do people believe advertising?
Personally, I think it CAN. But usually I tune-out commercials unless they are really funny. I like entertainment.

What it CAN DO though is bring the product to someone's attention when they may no know it exists (if it's new for instance) and if they advertise certain things like "no fat" -- that is going to get attention too since so many of us are trying to be in better shape physically.

I love the Windex commercial (with the birds shutting the door and the guy running into it) but I already buy windex so it didn't make me buy more.

I also love the GEICO commercials but I don't have GEICO and don't plan on getting it (just because of the commercials).
Reply:Of course it works , if it did not work they would not pour so much revenue into advertising dollars.

People believe advertising because most of us are mindless sheep ready and all to willing to follow the masses of opened wallet drones as they empty thier cash into the capitolist belly of the corprate retail beast.
Reply:Actually, your question might have been best under psychology . . . unless you're implying that people who believe in advertising are mentally ill . . . which I hope you're not.

Advertising work because advertisers use psychology to appeal to the masses. Ads feed upon people's insecurities and their desire to improve their lives (and what's wrong with that?). Ergo, ads usually feature people laughing and smiling and looking thin and glamorous and somehow better off if they're using the maker's product.

We suspend our beliefs when we watch those ads and our issues of insecurities or our overwhelming desire to be better, more beautiful, richer etc. override certain realities. Hmmm, perhaps we too can become happier and fulfill all our dreams if we use that particular brand of toothpaste. haha.

If most people took the time to think about it logically they would agree that ads just build a concept. But most people don't have enough time to think about ads and their impact. nor do they want to. Most people are too busy just living and trying to make do with the best they have.
Reply:We are all still waiting for alittle magic in our lives.

We want to believe what people tell us. We want to belong.
Reply:yea, sometmes it works.... u have to advertise a certain product so that some people would know all abt it and if they find the product good, then they will buy it. but sometimes it doesnt work though because some people find advertisement is just something that want to show them how a product id relly nice but the truth is that it's not...
