Where can I find out data about Internet Advertising?

Where can I find out data which reveals which companies are making the most from internet advertising. I've checked Alexa but this is more about rankings.

I'm doing a thesis about virtual community advertising and want to see what sites like Facebook and Myspace make compared to search engine marketing and portals.

I need references (so it's no good just providing the figures - I need facts).

Where can I find out data about Internet Advertising?
From internet world stats http://www.internetworldstats.com/blog.h...

About the IAB

Founded in 1996, the Interactive Advertising Bureau (www.iab.net) represents over 300 leading interactive companies that actively engage in and support the sale of interactive advertising. IAB members are responsible for selling over 86% of online advertising in the United States. On behalf of its members, the IAB is dedicated to the continuing growth of the interactive advertising marketplace, of interactive’s share of total marketing spend, and of its members’ share of total marketing spend. The IAB evaluates and recommends standards and practices, fields interactive effectiveness research, and educates marketers, agencies, and media companies, as well as the wider business community, about the value of interactive advertising.

The IAB has six core objectives:

Fend off adverse legislation and regulation

Coalesce around market-making measurement guidelines and creative standards

Create common ground with customers to reduce costly friction in the supply chain

Share best practices that foster industry-wide growth

Generate industry-wide research and thought leadership that solidifies Interactive as a mainstream medium

Create countervailing force to balance power of other media, marketing, and agency trade groups
Reply:Funny, there's NOTHING in the link given in the best answer that gives the asker the data he needs Report It

Reply:Internet Advertising Bureau http://www.iab.net/ has data on online ad SPENDING, but NO DATA for specific companies' online ad REVENUES, which is what you are looking for.

I have not seen any organization compile and research this data, or even make estimates on the top ad earnings of companies. The reason maybe is that both public and private companies are doing online advertising, and private companies such as Facebook may not be as willing to give out data

At least with ecommerce sales, Internet Retailer magazine compiles the top 500 ecommerce sites, but not in the area of online advertising.

It's either you have to contact the companies directly and ask for this information; or do the estimations yourself; or change your thesis altogether due to difficulty or lack of any data
Reply:For $10 lifetime membership you could advertise to millions every single day. All you pay is $10 put in your advertisment and you're off see your balance grow by the day.

Reply:I am afriad you will really struggle to find this sort of information... most of the companies you are looking at are private so will have absolutley no inclination to put information like this out in the public domain. Why would they?!

Try corporate pages of the various sites you are looking at, if appropriate they might give details in their investor relations pages.

Beyond that - I would imagine your University will have resources you can use. Can you get access to any analysts reports? Or even some Market analysis companies (Datamonitor, Mintel etc. although I don't know if they cover internet advertising)....

As I say though, it may well be that the facts you seek are just not available - after all they are pretty commercially sensative for the companies involved!

If this provides the backbone to your thesis it might be worth reconsidering emphasis, particularly as you won't be able to generate anything similar yourself.

What is your thoughts on advertising?

These days, our TV is bombarded with commercials for everything from cars to hemorroid creams. Do you think that 60% commercials/40% TV programing is fair? What about billboards and magazine advertising?

What is your thoughts on advertising?
You're right, it doesn't seem fair, does it? But unfortunately it

is a necessary evil required in order to sell and promote

products. There is too much competition these days not to

advertise and try to convince the shopper of why they need

your product. It's the difference that makes a successful

business and one that fails.

I especially don't like to see page after page of it in mag-

azines, so I am more selective now with what I buy. Since

I don't plan to buy a magazine that is mostly ads, no matter

how many scented cologne papers I find among the pages.

When you consider how much an average ad may cost

these days, and multiply that by 'x' number of pages in most

magazines, you can get a little idea of how much money

these advertisers are paying the magazine to show their

products. And they complain about the cost of producing

their monthly magazines? I guess they think the buying public

is too naive.

The cost of advertising on TV is much more expensive

than on paper or billboards. And it is annoying to see so

many ads fill our screens every ten or maybe even more

minutes. But there doesn't seem to be any solution to

that, unless you totally watch the Public Broadcasting

channel that provides commercial free programming,

but does want your donation dollar instead.

people how actualy have used it and seen resolts.

Does anyone know about PPC advertising and does it really work or not?
Pay Per Click advertising does work. I am a user of Google's adwords and I am able to track how many ad clicks turn into purchases on my ecommerce site. This means I can control exactly how much I spend per purchase, and I can be sure to spend way less than I make per transaction.
Reply:PPC advertising works great depending on the search engine and the industry that you are in. Obviously Google and Yahoo are the two best, but they can be pricey.
Reply:PPC advertising can be very effective if used correctly. As others have mentioned, Yahoo and Google are very pricey, but there are alternatives. CHoose a business or industry that is closely associated with your own, and approach them about adding a banner ad on their space. Not only will this help drive your traffi, but will also provide the website with additional funds.

Whatever you do, do not use the services of all-in-one companies that propose web design and ppc management. I tried using Webxites.com and they were a disaster. They probably spend $30 a month on ppc advertising, but were charging me $999.95 a month.

Whatever you do, stay away from Webxites. If you want to know more, look at their BBB rating. It is horrible. Not only do they have an amazingly high number of complaints, but they have been investigated for fraud.

The Best Defination of an advertising agency?

i want to know about advertising world

The Best Defination of an advertising agency?
An advertising agency or ad agency is a service business dedicated to creating, planning and handling advertising (and sometimes other forms of promotion) for their clients. An ad agency is independent from the client and provides an outside point of view to the effort of selling the client's products or services. An agency can also handle overall marketing and branding strategies and sales promotions for its clients.

Typical ad agency clients include businesses and corporations, non-profit organizations and government agencies. Agencies may be hired to produce single ads or, more commonly, ongoing series of related ads, called an advertising campaign.

Ad agencies come in all sizes, from small one- or two-person shops to large multi-national, multi-agency conglomerates such as Omnicom Group or WPP Group.

Some agencies specialize in particular types of advertising, such as print ads or television commercials. Other agencies, especially larger ones, produce work for many types of media (creating integrated marketing communications, or through-the-line (TTL) advertising). The "line", in this case, is the traditional marker between media that pay a (traditionally 15%) commission to the agency (mainly broadcast media) and the media that do not.

Which is closer to an advertising executive, visual communications, or graphic design?
if you want to be an advertising executive and focus on selling ad space then you really want to focus on the business aspect of the advertising industry. i have my bachelors in advertising and have been selling ad space for 7 years and to be honest half of the people i work with do not have a college degree, however it is important to have a degree to get in the door at any company. if you are looking for a career in art direction at an ad agency then i would recommend getting a degree in visual arts, or graphic design. it is a cut throat industry so make sure that your degree can be used in multiple facets so that you are not pigeon holed into one occupation. good luck.

Is pay-per-click search advertising really that effective?

It seems like some other methods of advertising (sponsorship. blogging, etc) are proving more effective. I'm not sure what the point of spending $100s is, if I'm not getting fantastic results.

Is pay-per-click search advertising really that effective?
Pay-per-click strategies really do not work since it is not a substitute for proper SEO metatag placement.

Since 85% of Internet users rely on search engines to find goods and services, it is essential that every business promote their business via a published domain named website on major search engines such as Google.com, Yahoo.com %26amp; MSN.com. These major search engines are the Yellow Pages for all business which can be reached by anyone having an Internet connection.

Begin by publishing your website's domain name for FREE at Google's search directory, visit "http://google.com/addurl/?continue=/add... and fill-in the form. In another way, Google, Yahoo or MSN provide a Yellow Pages kind of advertisement for every website according to a set of ranking protocols. And there's where web designers and search engine optimizers play an critical role in marketing websites which in turn, display goods and services to be discovered [via search directories] by the rest of the world. The greater the appearance or presence that one's website can generate on search directories, the greater number of customers will accordingly visitor one's website.

As for the cost to market one's website via the Internet and more particularly -- search directories, will depend initially with the proper design of webpages and the proper placement of metatags which are: %26lt;Title%26gt;, %26lt;Description%26gt; and %26lt;Keywords%26gt;.

A searchable %26lt;Title%26gt; would be "[name of the goods/services - a generic domain name is okay unless you own a well-know brand], [city], [state - postal abbreviation]" -- up to 65 characters and spaces. The %26lt;Description%26gt; would be up to 20 words comprising a complete readable sentence which promotes interest in your business, i.e., "We sell quality _____ at a reasonable price, etc." And %26lt;keywords%26gt; would consist of 12-15 compound plural words separated by commas, i.e., "cars, planes, transportation, etc."

In conclusion, webpages can either be rather straightforward using only HTML text or be crafted totally as a graphic Flash configuration. Either way, care should be taken to complete the Properties entries for Title, Description and Keywords so that there is something that search robots can index. The more one is educated in crafting effective webpages along with metatag placement, the less will be spent to hire third-party consultants to assist you in this matter.

To demonstrate how search engines/directories work, go to Yahoo.com and type in the following search query: "pizza downtown los angeles." [Note: do not include the quotes (").] Again, this is a very generic query which means you want to order a "pizza" from "downtown" and in what city -- "Los Angeles." Sounds fairly simple and then hit Enter. In a moment or two, there will appear some 1.3 million search results and among the top Five rankings will be a business called "Pizza Next Door, etc." The significance of this demonstration is to illustrate that most Interest shoppers will discover "Pizza Next Door," forthright because of its high web presence and ranking within the Top Five. So these shoppers are more or less likely to patronize this pizza establishment and hopefully in the long term; validate the owner and his family as having a profitable Internet enterprise.

To further illustrate how one can achieve a TOP 10 page ranking on Google.com, type in the following search query: "ecommerce tutorials seo." [Note: do not include the quotes (").] Again, this is a very generic query. Then hit Enter. In a moment or two, there will appear some 1.44 million search results and among the TOP 10 rankings will be a website called "Welcome to Downtown Los Angeles."

Good luck!
Reply:PPC is very effective IF you choose the right keywords and write effective ads. The single thing that is the most important is Keyword research. The best thing about PPC advertising is the traffic starts very quickly sometimes it just takes a few minutes to begin getting traffic. Keywords is the key.
Reply:it will boost you in the rankings for sure - which will eventually help you in the un-sponsored rankings.

Hotel management?? GOOD PAY?!!! law? advertising?

hi!

im looking for a career! i already had those vocational tests. and i need to chose the best you know? im gonna do this for the rest of my life so i need to make the best choice.

ok first of all, i would like to work in canada, uss, or australia.

second, i want a good pay, or at least a decent one.

so my very first choice was hotel management, but after reading some stuff about it for a long time, i just realized this: pay isnt the best. and cant get into a high position, the highest ive red is manager, you know? nothing higher. and you gotta be lucky to get a decent job, or company. i dont want to end up working at a motel. But i love this career! i mean the prospectus alumni fits me perfect! im so a hotel management. anyways now i was thinking on becoming a lawyer wich seems good but i cant find the right university! and takes along time. advertising im good at creating but i frustrate easily. real state im good at selling so i dont know!! any suggestions? or any career

Hotel management?? GOOD PAY?!!! law? advertising?
G'day,

In Australia, hospitality industry is booming and the good colleges/unis have work experience programs which enable the students to get jobs quite easily after finishing their study (depending on the grades though).

Lawyers... yes, well-paid, if you can fit in all those previous case studies well enuf in your head. Yes... you can find it in the book, but you have to remember it first, right?! Not to mention expensive tuition fees!!

Advertising... how's your creativity? R u the kind of person that everytime seeing new stuff, already thinking of how to promote it?

This is the last point that will make it even more difficult for you: I'll say 30% of ppl working and earning quite well today do not even have the same study background. My own experience: I have Bachelor of Business degree in MIS and Marketing, and now I am working in the area where I am helping international students coming to Australia... totally unrelated career from my education background.

My point is, no matter what are you going to study in the future, please keep your options open wide for ANY future opportunity.

Hope this helps. Good luck for your study :)
Reply:Most of my working years so far have been in the hotel business. If that's somthing you wan to pursue then by all mean you should do it. Yeah maybe you might not get the greatest pay in th eworld, but at least you'll be doing something that makes you happy. You won't be bored or fed up of going to work every morning. Anyway if you get into the right hotel I'm sure the $ wouldn't be that bad. You can always work your way up from manager to district manager. Who knows maybe you could end up owning your own one day if you become successful @ it.

Anyone with experience with collections and Yellow Page advertising with the big bad phone company?

The local phone company (Bellsouth now ATT) really screwed me over with some mistakes and number changes the past few years. So, my business lost a lot of money and I had no money to pay the outrageous bill. Well they have now started pursuing me and/or my business with some collections company. For the first time they threatened something about my credit, my phone, or my business credit. This account is in the name of a corporation, but of course it is just my small business. I still am in good standing paying the phone bill - but the advertising is behind by almost $10,000.

Aside from my business credit getting kicked or no YP advertising for next year ... do I have anything to worry about. I just really need my phone number to stay in place for at least another year else I won't be able to make any money with my business. Also, my personal credit is very good ... and I've been told they shouldn't hit it with bad debt from my corporation just because I'm the "president" of it.

Anyone with experience with collections and Yellow Page advertising with the big bad phone company?
It depends on whether or not you signed a 'personal guarantee' for this bill. If you did, then you can be reported for both personal and business. They can still hit the reporting agencies too. They may also be able to take you to court for the balance of the bill. Not only will your business be cited, but possibly you personally if there is a personal guarantee. I know that quite a few of the contracts have it worked into the contract that you cannot sue them in excess of the original contract amount vs what has been paid. In other words, you cannot sue them for $10,000 if your bill is only $2,000. Pull out the contract and read this section. You may be wise to have a lawyer take care of this for you, rather than trying this yourself.
Reply:I am a bill collector who has done business to busines collections. And yes, your fears are founded. If your business is an incorporation and you are the president, you can be held PERSONALLY liable. This very well could affect your personal credit. If your business was an LLC you would be fine, but an INC is a different story
Reply:As long as you are paying your phone bill, they cannot touch your phone. Your advertising bill is a separate thing.....they like to try to muscle people by holding the phone bill over your head.

If you have legitimate grievances about your ads, then submit it in writing and state this to the next manager you speak to.

Looking forward..once you get out of this pickle I would encourage you to never place an ad in the yellow pages again...it is an absolute waste of advertising money. Spend your advertising dollar on media that will reach your customers on a continuous basis...you want people to know the name of the business they're gonna use, before they ever need the service. When people have to go to the yellow pages for help...that means your marketing has completely failed. You NEVER want people going to the yellow pages to look for you. Ever.

You do want them going to the white page listing however, to get your actual number if need be. ...there is a difference.

People have been programmed to belive they need to be in the yellow book in order to compete in th ebusiness world.

That is a myth. The truth is, if businesses didn't have to dish out all their advertising budget into a book that is closed 99.99% of the time (literally...do the math...that is the actual number)...they would be more successful because they could have spent the money on real advertising and marketing techniques that work.

And if you use the Netscape browser, the built-in Composer feature is a superior HTML authoring tool. You can easily generate a full-blown website as a Homepage. Nevertheless, the "homepage" URL is likely to be "http://homepage.earthlink.com/subscribe... name" and that URL can easily be overwritten via a redirection service, i.e., "mydomain.com" which allows you to link any registered domain name to "mask" another website. For example, should you type in "domainname.com", you will be immediately transported to the homepage and the hompage URL of http://homepage.earthlink.com/subscriber... name will be masked by the domainname.com. And the charge for the redirection service [even at godaddy.com] is normally FREE. Here's a demonstration: Type in the URL window: "www.pizzanextdoor.com" which will bring up their pizza website. Take note of the domain name. Then type in the URL window: "http://home.pacbell.net/vten/1a/pizzame... and you will see that this is the original homepage which is unmasked without the domain name!

Another good place to start, assuming you have agency or other staff experience as a copywriter, is former colleagues. If they think you're any good, that is.

I recently got a call from a guy I used to work with who had a large client who, in addition to the flashy national TV, had a whole bunch of smaller projects (promo/web/FSI etc) that their agency wasn't paying enough attention to.

I did a little project with them. They loved it, and I ended-up re-writing their entire website. And they just called back with more work. The money is good, the client is national and the contact that led to it all was someone I had met 10 years ago. So search your memory bank and start networking. "Who you know" is every bit as important as they say it is.

The other angle you might try is placing a classified ad offering your services in a (very) local newspaper or, better yet, the local Chamber of Commerce website or newsletter. Hey, that's a good idea...

I'm gonna' try it myself.

How do I choose whether to go into advertising or teaching?

I'm in quite a predicament. I'm very creative and I'm very interested in advertising, but I also love teaching someone something new (that's why I like Answers). I would love to teach, but it's a hard job with low pay and few benefits. Advertising would be higher pay, but it's a difficult buissness and I'm not sure if I like the "office-cubicl" kind of environment. What should I go into and why?

How do I choose whether to go into advertising or teaching?
You seem to have a conflict of interests. In order to decide which career would be better for you, you will have to sit down with a pen and paper and list out things that are most important to you. Also make lists of the pros and cons of each job. Once you figure out which job would be better for you, chooses that one. You also might try researching each career before doing anything if you haven't already. Think about what is important to you. Can you still do those things in the careers you have chosen? You just need to look at all the options.
Reply:Teach advertising.
Reply:Nothing wrong witih either of them. In fact you have given pros and cons to both. Let me try to give yo uanother perspective.

If you want to join advertising for the glamour and money, forget it. It is donkey's work and never pays enough. As your lifestyle will allow you to save.

Teaching on teh other hand can be very interesting. But if you are a control freak, forget teaching. You will spoil the students.

It completely depends on what you want to do. What you are happy doing and where you can have a means for your life. not in terms of money but in terms of satisfaction at work.

You just need to be super creative , think the way normal people dont ! :D (read wierdo lol) Most ad ppl are wierdos in real life ! lol lol

Advertising is the fine line between sanity and insanity lol :)

Its all about thinking out of the box :)

And you need to absolutely passionate about what you are doing :) Passion is the watch word :)

If you have the passion to get there with the right amount of creativity , theres no stopping you :) You dont need degrees to be an ad professional... you just need to unleash and bask in the splendour :)

A good way to start is to intern with an ad agency for a couple of months and see how it goes... it jus doesnt work out for some people... if you are good there is a good possibility that the agency will hire you... everyone in the media start their career without getting paid even a penny... thats the way it is... you might not see big money first... but...once you carve a space for yourself... there is no looking back..

Good luck:)

High stress, egomaniac tolerance, job insecurity, vanity and paranoia just about complete my personal definition of my last 25 years of employment. It's a very subjective industry, people will believe what you can convince them of, not what you have done. A great portfolio gets all the work, a resume means nothing

Why are used car dealers advertising NO LICENSE REQUIRED...?

Here in California, I noticed that all of the used car dealers are advertising NO LICENSE REQUIRED to purchase a car...Even though the governor has twice vetoed a bill to issue driver's licenses to illegal immigrants...Does anyone else see a problem or inconsistency with this?

Why are used car dealers advertising NO LICENSE REQUIRED...?
Car dealers LOVE to sell to illegals!! its like a free pass! they can charge them way too much for a piece of crap that shouldnt be on the road and then if something goes wrong with the car what are the buyers gonna do? they can't do squat cuz they are illegal! its a win win if you are a car dealer. for the rest of us it just means more unsafe uninsured vehicles being driven by unsafe illegal drivers! dontcha just love it!
Reply:Good question.... I am not from California but how do they get around the insurance laws? One must have full coverage (if financing) and at least liability in order to drive off the lot. How can they purchase an auto without insurance? I guess its possible that maybe a citizen with a drivers license could be insured on the policy with the non licensed driver but I just wonder about the legalities of it all.
Reply:Don't you know , ILLEGAL ALIENS
Reply:You don't need a license to OWN a car. You do need one to DRIVE one.
Reply:Same problem with banks like Bank of American and Wells Fargo making mortgages for illegals without SSN's. If I went to a bank and applied without out a SSN they would laugh me out the door.

It's all about the $$$ not what benefits the people. And it's not just Bush, Clinton with NAFTA. D or R $$$ talks.
Reply:They are following big businesses lead-anything for greed and support of illegal immigration

What's the history of advertising?

how was advertising began

What's the history of advertising?
Commercial messages and political campaign displays have been found in the ruins of ancient Arabia. Egyptians used papyrus to create sales messages and wall posters, while lost-and-found advertising on papyrus was common in Greece and Rome. Wall or rock painting for commercial advertising is another manifestation of an ancient media advertising form, which is present to this day in many parts of Asia, Africa, and South America. For instance, the tradition of wall painting can be traced back to Indian rock-art paintings that go back to 4000 BC. As printing developed in the 15th and 16th century, advertising expanded to include handbills. In the 17th century advertisements started to appear in weekly newspapers in England.

These early print ads were used mainly to promote books and newspapers, which became increasingly affordable thanks to the printing press, and medicines, which were increasingly sought after as disease ravaged Europe. However, false advertising and so-called "quack" ads became a problem, which ushered in regulation of advertising content.

Although advertising has existed for a long time, explicit "branding" is a product of the late 1800s. Due to the prevalence of dangerous products and unregulated industries of the Industrial Revolution, brands were introduced to increase the reputation and value of a particular manufacturer. An identified brand often meant safety and quality. Quaker Oats is among the oldest modern brands in continual use.

Edo period advertising flyer from 1806 for a traditional medicine called KinseitanLydia Pinkham was one of the true success stories of personality branding. Her family used her name and image to promote their patent medicine in the 1800s. The product was incredibly successful. Women wrote Lydia for advice; often the company would reply. Lydia herself was uninvolved; even after her the company kept up appearances, continuing to answer letters addressed to her by consumers.

As the economy was expanding during the 19th century, advertising grew alongside. In the United States, classified ads became even more popular, filling pages of newspapers with small print messages promoting all kinds of goods. The success of this advertising format led to the growth of mail-order advertising such as the Sears Catalog, at one time referred to as the "Farmer's Bible". In 1843, the first advertising agency was established by Volney Palmer in Philadelphia. At first, agencies were brokers for ad space in newspapers. N.W. Ayer %26amp; Son was the first full-service agency to assume responsibility for advertising content. It was also the first agency to charge a commission on ads.

At the turn of the century there were few career choices for women in business; however, advertising was one. Since women were responsible for most of the purchasing in their household, advertisers and agencies recognized the value of women's insights during the creative process. In fact, the first American advertising to use a ual sell was created by a woman for a soap. Although tame by today's standards, it featured a couple and said "The skin you love to touch".

When radio stations began broadcasting in the early 1920s, the programs were aired without advertising. The first radio stations were established by radio equipment manufacturers and retailers offering programming to sell radios. However many non-profit operators followed suit, such as schools, clubs, and civic groups.

A print advertisement for the 1913 issue of the Encyclopædia BritannicaThe radio station owners soon realized they could earn more money by selling sponsorship rights to other businesses. In those days, each show was usually sponsored by a single business, in exchange for a brief mention of the sponsor at the beginning and end of the show. This practice was carried over to television in the late 1940s and early 1950s.

However, a fierce battle was fought between those seeking to commercialize this new medium and the people who argued that the radio spectrum should be considered the commons, to be used only non-commercially and for the public good. In Canada, advocates like Graham Spry were able to convince the government to adopt a socialist funding . England followed suit with the development of the BBC. However in the United States, the capitalist prevailed with the passage of the 1934 Communications Act which created the Federal Communications Commission. To placate the socialists, the U.S. Congress did require that commercial broadcasters operate in the "public interest, convenience, and necessity". However public radio certainly exists in the United States.

In the early 1950s, the Dumont television network began the modern trend of selling advertisement time to multiple sponsors. Dumont had trouble finding sponsors for many of their programs and compensated by selling smaller blocks of advertising time to several businesses. This eventually became the norm for the commercial television industry in the United States. However, it was still a common practice to have single sponsor shows, such as the U.S. Steel Hour. In some instances the sponsors exercised great control over the content of the show - up to and including having one's advertising agency actually writing the show. The single sponsor is much less prevalent now, a notable exception being the Hallmark Hall of Fame.

The 1960s saw advertising transform into a modern, more scientific approach in which creativity was allowed to shine, producing unexpected messages that made advertisements more tempting to consumers' eyes. The Volkswagen ad campaign featuring such headlines as "Think Small" and "Lemon"(these were used to descirpe the appearance of the car)ushered in the era of modern advertising by promoting a "position" or "unique selling proposition" designed to associate each brand with a specific idea in the reader or viewer's mind. This period of American advertising is called the Creative Revolution and its poster boy was Bill Bernbach who helped create the revolutionary Volkswagen ads among others. Some of the most creative and long-standing American advertising dates to this incredibly creative period.

The late 1980s and early 1990s saw the introduction of cable television and particularly MTV. Pioneering the concept of the music video, MTV ushered in a new type of advertising: the consumer tunes in for the advertising message, rather than it being a byproduct or afterthought. As cable (and later satellite) television became increasingly prevalent, "specialty" channels began to emerge, and eventually entire channels, such as QVC, Home Shopping Network and ShopTV, devoted to advertising merchandise, where again the consumer tuned in for the ads.

Marketing through the Internet opened new frontiers for advertisers and contributed to the "dot-com" boom of the 1990s. Entire corporations operated solely on advertising revenue, offering everything from coupons to free Internet access. At the turn of the 21st century, the search engine Google revolutionized online advertising by emphasizing contextually relevant, unobtrusive ads intended to help, rather than inundate, users. This has led to a plethora of similar efforts and an increasing trend of interactive advertising.

The share of advertising spending relative to GDP has changed little across large changes in media. For example, in the U.S. in 1925, the main advertising media were newspapers, magazines, signs on streetcars, and outdoor posters. Advertising spending as a share of GDP was about 2.6%. By 1998, television and radio had become major advertising media. Nonetheless, advertising spending as a share of GDP was slightly lower -- about 2.4%.

A recent advertising innovation is "guerrilla promotions", which involve unusual approaches such as staged encounters in public places, giveaways of products such as cars that are covered with brand messages, and interactive advertising where the viewer can respond to become part of the advertising message. This reflects an increasing trend of interactive and "embedded" ads, such as via product placement, having consumers vote through text messages, and various innovations utilizing social networking sites (e.g. My Space).

Does anyone know an advertising agency hiring for internship/entry-level in SF?

I've been on craigslist for the past 8 months looking for an entry level position in marketing/advertising/PR in SF. I will be studying in SFSU this year, but no one has called me. I have relative experience in sales, recruiting, consultanting, and finance for the past 4 years. Don't know what other sources I could find on the internet. Please help!

Does anyone know an advertising agency hiring for internship/entry-level in SF?
Craigslist is not the best way to go to find this type of job. Check out ad agency websites; you can generally find directories on the SF Chamber of Commerce, or, better yet, at AdAge.com, etc. Submit your resume to each of their sites as the first thing you do.

You should also read industry press and check industry sites. For example, if you're interested in advertising online, you should go to mediapost.com and iab.net. If you like word of mouth advertising/marketing, check out the WOMMA site.

I'm not affiliated with them in any way, but figured I'd pass along the info.

Hope that helps!
Reply:The next steps could be to get the yellow pages out or an ADWEEK or ADAge and contact the agencies who have either won big accounts recently (they all like to brag!) or are pitching big accounts. They need staff! Secondly, go to the San Francisco Ad Club, link below, and see if you can go to a meeting or two to network face-to-face with agency owners, creatives, account execs and pitch yourself to them in person!! Have resumes to give them and the phone will be ringing soon. SF is a HOT market and energetic, hardworking, willing-to-do-what-it-takes will go a long way.

Does marlboro use false advertising?

If you can buy a pack of Marlboro's for $5.50

but they have a special

It costs $6.50

How can it be "Buy one get one free"?

False advertising is:

“an advertisement, other than labeling, which is

misleading in a material respect.”

What do you think?

Does marlboro use false advertising?
I totally see where you are coming from on this..and have asked them about it before! They claim it is because they are selling either A: the standard ONE pack to you for $5.50 or B: the promotional pack to you for $6:50 which will include a 2nd pack for free! ....I know it doesn't exactly make sense!:(

I need VERY affordable advertising websites or tips?

I just started my small home base bizz and I'm on a short budget. I need very affordable and effective advertising tips for both cold and warm market.

Thank you!

I need VERY affordable advertising websites or tips?
The most effective way to advertise on the Internet is

to first set up a website and publish its domain name

on major search directories such as Google.com,

Yahoo.com [at http://www.google.com/addurl/?...... and

MSN.com since 85% of Internet shoppers rely on these

search directories to provide them with goods and

services. In a sense, these search directories are a

very large Internet Yellow Pages.

Nevertheless, should your website or opening webpage

fail to contain "generic" keywords, then anyone using

such "generic" queries will not be able to discover

your website. Your domain name [URL] of your website,

in a sense, will be invisible, undiscoverable.

You may want to consider some simple algorithms which,

when observed and committed in designing of a website

with placement of various critical metatags that can

surely achieve a high search engine presence and

increase Internet traffic to your website. These

metatag strategies work well with published webpages

at Google and Yahoo.

Design: Should you create an extensive Flash-based

website, make sure to fill-in the property entries

such as the Title, Description and Keywords. Failing

to do so, leaves no hard HTML or ALT resource that can

be readily indexed by search robots. Also consider the

Internet audience and their incoming setup. For

example, if they are on analog/dialup, Flash webpages

take too long to load up and therefore analog users

will likely lose interest and discontinue entering the

Flash site. On the other hand, anyone on hi-speed DSL

lines, will welcome Flash pages which load quickly. So

before designing a pure Flash websitge, ask the simple

question, "Who's my end user - is he on dialup or

DSL?" And if you had to choose between these two users

for maximum marketability, then select analog users

since 80% of most resident users are still analog

Internet subscribers and pure HTML designed webpages

is best for them.

A non-Flash-based website which relies on hard text,

is far easier to be indexed by search robots. Limit

the use of stylized text saved as .gifs since as a

graphic, they are not indexable by search robots.

Avoid use of frames since any number of search robots

are unable to properly classify textual material.

Placement of Metatags:

A ranking or search order does take place with Google

and Yahoo and it begins with the "Title" metag which

should consist of no more than 65 characters separated

by commas. The "Title" should describe in generic

terms, the goods and services, followed by a location

from which the resource is located, i.e., city, state.

The placement of a domain name which is not generic

within the "Title" is not appropriate, unless your

domain name is a major recognizable brand name.

The second metatag is the "Description" which is

usually 25-30 words to form a complete sentence which

best describes one's goods and services.

And the very last category - "Keywords" are also

somewhat limited to 15-16 words which can be plural

and compound in nature. Again, avoid multiple entries

which could be mistaken as "spamdexed entries" which

is defined as the loading, and submission of

repetitive words into a particular metatag category.

"Spamdexing" when discovered on a webpage and reported

to Google's spamreport.com can result in the

elimination of your website from their search

directory.

Here's an example of a very highly-placed website on

Google.com: Begin with the very "generic" search query

"sandwiches downtown los angeles," taking note to not

abbreviate Los Angeles to "LA" and of course, leave

out the parentheses ("). It will bring up some 2.4

million+ search results. Check out where "Nazos.net"

is ranked. It's ranked No. 1!

Again, Nazos.net's high web presence was achieved by

proper web design and placement of relevant metatags

according to Google's publication guidelines.

Good luck!

What is the difference between marketing and advertising?

What is the difference between marketing and advertising?

I am going to look at colleges over vacation and I think that my dream job would be something to do with fashion merchandising or being like a buyer. I am not sure what major would be the best for this. I am thinking either marketing or advertising/public relations. Which major would help me with those career goals and also offer me the most flexibility in finding other jobs?

What is the difference between marketing and advertising?
Marketing is promoting a product which may or may not involve advertising.

These days every Tom, Dick and Harry has a bachelors. IMHO the best thing you can do for your career is to decide on doing a Masters now. This means instead of taking subjects for your career in undergrad like marketing do subjects that teach you to think eg math, English, philosophy etc. Save the actual vocational subjects like marketing for your postgraduate. It also means not worrying about going to some expensive ultra prestigious school for your undergrad - save that for post-grad. This approach will also save you money over doing only an undergrad at an expensive school. You can save even more money by starting at a CC.

Thanks

Bill

Do you think Newspaper advertising still worth the money now days?

I am starting up a small business and thinking about spending $170.00 for a 2 week ad just to see how it goes. If I dont get a single call I am only out $170.00 thats they way I see it.

Has anyone heard of newspaper advertising working?

Do you think Newspaper advertising still worth the money now days?
Ads only work if they are consistently placed for 6 months or more. I have tried and failed many times at the advertise a couple of times in one place or another and they never seem to work.

My PR and sales coach are really big on the networking. It takes some time as well, but the cost is fairly minimal.
Reply:It doesn't alway work.

You need to create a colorful catalog and find out how much it cost for Sunday newspaper to include your catalog inserted along with other.

Black and white is a boring ads, don't you think?
Reply:Newspaper will still work. With our modern times I believe that newspaper industry has been plummeting. With all the new technologies out there such as cell phones and computers, people rarely look at the newspaper. I only look through the papers for ads. Most of the news and ads I see are through the net.

I still say give it try because you never no. There are still people who enjoy grabbing a cup of coffee and reading the newspaper.

HOWEVER, you can place an add with a clip out coupon the customer can redeem. This will let you know how many readers there are in your area. If you only get a few responses, then the money could be spent on a better format.
Reply:Are you looking for leads or just straight advertising your business? contact me and I could explain to you what I know.live4_2day@yahoo.com
Reply:Honestly, I rarly read the paper now and even then I never look at ads. The people you would be hiting at are probably only the elderly. So I would not count whole hardley on your ad. I would go for the local TV station and spend a little extra. Goodluck.

Can you get an advertising job with a 2yr marketing degree?

I will go to school for marketing in august but its a tech school and I dont want a crap job I want an advertising type job maybe something to do with product promotion or something like that

Can you get an advertising job with a 2yr marketing degree?
You should be able to. You should not have any problem with getting one. Of course, all jobs have certain educational requirements. You might do a search online for that field with the degree or certification. It is also known that people can be over-qualified for positions too. I would check into that before I spent the money in this school.
Reply:Why do you want a J-O-B why not start your own business? Check out my website and see for your self...www.FreedomAtHomeTeam.com/BonnieL...
Reply:Hello,

I think a degree is a good means to find a 9 to 5 job.

It is worth to give a parallel thought to get trained in how to use the internet as a powerful media for advertising.

This means that even while doing the degree course you would be able to utilise the benefits of internet advertising and develop an online advertising or marketing business.

When you are confered the degree you will have something to manage and generate money while you do the interview parades. This will help you going until you achieve the right job dreamed.

Otherwise you not even search for a job because you will have a business you own online to manage and develop to achieve you dreams as I now do.

Best of luck in all the endeavours to achieve your dreams.

The business community spends more money on advertising than on environmental control. Many believe.....???

The business community spends more money on advertising than on environmental control. Many believe advertising fuels a “culture of waste” that leads to heavy use of energy and other resources. People with money are enticed to buy unneeded products- more clothes, another car or TV, a new product to replace one that is still working well, and frequently second homes. Think about your understanding of the word sustainability. Is consumerism compatible with sustainability?

The business community spends more money on advertising than on environmental control. Many believe.....???
I believe they're completely compatible. the rich provide jobs and wealth for the rest of society. Their consumerism is related to their wealth. If a dwindling supply of resources causes the price of consumer goods to rise, than as a society we will consume less. The free market never fails.
Reply:I believe consumerism IS compatible with sustainability, but only if our current mentality changes. Consumerism can be fueled by higher priced items that are of a higher quality and last longer, and also by reusing.

For instance, someone that purchases a piece from a used furniture store is using a recycled product, they can have it reupholstered in order to suit their purposes, perhaps donate or recycle the previous upholstered material (which can be made into a new product. The used furniture store, the upholsterer, and possible the company that uses the recycled material would all benefit financially.

So I suppose the answer would be that yes, consumerism is compatible with sustainability. But is MEGA-consumerism (huge mega-corps like Wal-Mart and such) compatible? Probably not. There's a difference (and it involves a lot of what's wrong with our society besides just environmental issues).

Any tips on selling advertising space?

I recently bought a franchise for a community magazine but am having trouble selling the advertising space. It is an A5 glosy full colour mag with a quarter page just £40, but after a month of visiting EVERY business in my town centre and industrial estate I only got 4 quarter pages and 1 half. People claimed to not have any budget, not be interetsed as it is not established, etc etc.

I need to pay for it to be printed and delivered and pay a wage as I gave up my job to do it. Any advice?

Any tips on selling advertising space?
I am working for a brand new business myself; here's what we're doing:

1) Give companies a free trial to advertise. I know you have costs to cover but you need to think about long term here. If they get results, they'll do it again.

2) Keep in very close contact with those companies who do buy advertising space from you. Seek feedback as to the kind of results they are receiving from your advertising, and then you can use this information to sell to potential new clients.
Reply:i have several pieces of advice. first take the new phone book and the old phone book and compare them. new business are more likel to buy advertising. second maybe you should make your ad space a community area business review.just write a short "news story" about 10 -12 DIFFERENT KIND OF BUSINESS AND PRINT THEM INSTEAD OF LAYOUTS ,,HOPE THIS HELPS

Google adwords is a text-based system for advertising on its site and its partner sites. The service allows you to create your own ads, choose keywords to help match your ads to your audience, and control the cost of your advertising—you pay only when people click on your ad (a cost per click plan). Anyone wishing to promote a product on Google can enroll in this program.

Is it difficult to get a job in the advertising industry in the UK if you are american?

I am an American citizen and I heard it was very difficult to find a job in the UK if you are a non-citizen. Jobs go to UK then EU citizens first. I know the advertising industry is very diverse and I wondered if anyone knew if it was easier to get a job in that industry. I will be graduating with a BS in Advertising next year. Also, I will be coming in because I will be marrying a British Citizen, so that would make me a permanent resident. Could anyone tell me the likelihood that I would be able to acquire a job in advertising and help support him and myself? Or at least if being a permanent resident helps in finding a job. Thanks!

Brand placement on TV & advertising rates there?

Yes this is for a class project. However, finding numbers of the cost of advertising for different shows is what I need to estimate the cost of brand placement on each individual one. THANKS!

Brand placement on TV %26amp; advertising rates there?
My suggestion would be to contact your local cable or a satellite company. You can get a rate sheet that has rates for local, regional, and national advertising cost for ESPN, Disney, HBO, E, CNN, etc. If your local cable company doesn't show the major affiliate information and some don't such as ABC, NBC, or CBS, I would suggest you contact another large cable company that does business in several markets who has those channels so you can get the rates locally and nationally. The satellite companies should have a rate sheet that includes everybody.

How can I secure advertising for my web page?

I have a website for mothers, and I would like to get some advertising for the site. Any suggestions?

How can I secure advertising for my web page?
A quick source for advertising would be Google's AdSense or the Yahoo Publisher Network. However, the best way to sell advertising on your site is to let visitors know that they can advertise on your site. Use a "Advertise Here" button to show some of your traffic numbers and search terms visitors use to find your site.

The ad revenue can be paid directly to you for a specific period of time; like by the week or month and you can sell text links, banner ads or buttons of many different sizes.

Good Luck.
Reply:It's all about traffic.

It is a vicious cycle of business. More people visit your site more you can charge for advertising. To get more people to your site you need to spend more money on advertising.

The secret to web site success is usually lays in content. When you have more and interesting content that make people stay on your site and come back often then you get more traffic.

People have a tendency to spread rumors about good things. Also, spend some money on google adword, and yahoo advertising, so you grab some search fanatics out there.

There is no real security in anything these days. Even popular sites have their days of fame and the next day nobody knows about them.

Are you a UK advertising copywriter?

Hi, I'm 16 and I'm half way through my A Levels. I'm really interested in advertising and I've been reading up about a career in it.

I've just come onto here because I'd like to speak to some people that are industry and get some advice from them.

I'm mainly interested in hearing from copywriters but advice from anyone connected with the job would be useful.

If you can spare some time to have a chat with me (especially if you're based in London) then I'd really appreciate it.

Reply here or email me (danieljohnmccabe@gmail.com) if you can help. Thanks.

What is the best computer for creative advertising (graphic design, audio, video) and essential software?

I'm in the market for a new computer, which I plan to use in creative advertising. I was wondering what others in the field are currently using in terms of hardware and software -- essentially, I'm interested in what is considered "top of the line" in 2007 for advertising professionals.

I have pretty much every piece of Adobe software from the late 90's, and am positive I want to purchase their newer versions.

In respect to layout software like QuarkXpress, is this still being used for advertisements or has InDesign taken over?

All in all, I'm looking to spend around $1500 to $2000 total for hardware and software (I also get a student discount for Apple's online store.) I realize this won't allow the purchase of a Mac Pro desktop and Adobe Creative Suite 3, but I figure there have to be other scaled-down Macs that can get the job done. Would a suped up MacBook be ideal, if so.. which one?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Lawsuits over cereal and federal laws governing advertising...?

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070614/ap_o...

The URL above goes to an article discussing Kellog's agreement to meat certain guidelines and regulations concerning nutritional content and advertising for children's cereals. The agreed to meet these items as a way to avoid a lawsuit from two children's obesity awareness groups and two sets of parents in MA.

While I fully support the need for children's foods to be healthier and the need to control advertising geared towards young children, I find myself wondering why we feel that we can sue any company that is doing something we don't agree with. Obesity...childhood and otherwise..is a major problem in the US. Childhood obesity is shoothing through the roof and, yes, part of the problem comes from what our kids have available to eat. Yes, we parents can use all the help they can get in making healthy choices, so getting foods our kids like to be healthier isn't a bad idea. But the biggest issue for obesity isn't

Lawsuits over cereal and federal laws governing advertising...?
your absolutly right,

its our job as parents to look out for our childern but we cannot just go sueing everyone who thinks differently.

We might as well sure Harveys, Mac Donalds, Wendys, Burger King, Jack in the box, Sonic and the list goes on and on.
Reply:I was going to ask this same question when I saw that article. The reason why they are able to do this is because a few individuals get together and decide that they have to do something about the obesity problem in the US. So they think, what about raising awareness and offering information about how to eat healthier and exercise? The problem with that is that many parents won’t enforce the pitiful amount of self control it would take to actually change their kid’s habit. So they decide to attack the root of the issue. Honestly could cereal be healthier? Yes. However, they should not be made to change through lawsuits and basically scare tactics. These individuals who think they are changing society for the good are essentially teaching their kids that you don’t need self control, you can just force people to stop making your vice. I went to the Campaign For A Commercial-Free Childhood website and you can not comment on there. I had no way to tell them, all of them, that they are changing America into an oligarchy, and that they might think only kids eat that crap but their wrong! I want to start my own Campaign. I would call it the Campaign for a Campaign-Free Earth, we are against anything that restricts our ability to do whatever we want, as Adults. We are also for Parents Actually Taking Responsibility for their Kids. So that would be CCFE in partnership with PATRK. I like my junk food, I am 6 foot 1 inch tall and I have trouble keeping 165lbs on my frame, I eat healthy and I eat junk food. I exercise, I do this thing called “going out side” and guess who taught me about that? MY MOM AND DAD! See the parents these days don’t realize that when they don’t want to deal with their kids don’t sit them in front of the TV, kick their butts outside! But don’t give them money, tell them to be home by a certain time for dinner. I’m willing to bet that even if you feed them some deep fat fried crap they will work the fat off tomorrow when you kick them out again and don’t tell me they will just go outside and sit around, have you ever seen a kid just sit around? He might do it for like 5 minutes but when it realizes he can’t come back inside he’ll take off, trust me.
Reply:I agree. I ate frosted flakes growing up and even had TV dinner back when they were a cool luxury item. I have never had problems with weight bc my mom would give me a bowl of cereal and a banana and then tell me to go play. I think parents need to accept the fact that they are to blame for their children being obese, they govern what their kids eat and do, and stop blaming someone else for their insufficient parenting.
Reply:good point. i've wondered the same thing myself. it's as though people are holding everyone else responsible b/c they don't know how to say no to their children. i do believe companies gear their marketing towards kids partially because they know that somes parents can't say no but ,i don't feel it is lawsuit worthy.
Reply:I guess next the parents will be suing the companies that make televisions because their obese kids watch tv all day instead of getting any exercise. They could sue the company that makes the tv, the cable or satellite company and the companies that produce the shows. Then they can sue the computer companies and everyone who makes websites with games their kids like to play. Then there's the makers of x-box, playstation, gameboy, etc. The list could go on and on. You are right. The parents can limit what their children eat and do but for some reason parents don't want to accept responsibility for their children being overweight.

Who here is an advertising art director???
I'm a graphic designer, and work with advertising...maybe i can help.

All i can tell you is your current major will not get you into an advertising art director position. If you want to go towards the creative end of advertising i suggest getting a bachelors' in Graphic Design at least and then possibly going for either a bachelors' or masters in advertising. You're really going to want the design background first to give you the foundation for well-presented ads. The advertising degree will help you fine-tune and hone your skills to advertising specifically, but you don't necessarily need it....but the more education the better.

A good portfolio is key, along with people skills and organizational skills are also what employers look for.
Reply:I also want to add to the other poster's comment that you should definitely major in Visual Communication or Graphic Design. To be a Creative Director comes with time and experience. A CD is not an entry level job. However, it sounds like you are ambitious which is great! Generally, when you are a graphic designer you work in an advertising department or for an advertising firm that creates....advertisements. ha. So switch majors and you should be on the right path
