While there are a decent number of jobs in advertising in the US (no idea for Canada), there are far more people studying the field at university than there are entry level jobs. It will not be possible for you, an Australian, to find an entry level job in advertising in the US after you get your degree. There are plenty of US applicants, so employers won't be interested in sponsoring your visa - a very expensive process.

US entry level advertising jobs for advertising majors tend to be low paid, at first. It's later in your career that you make money.

However, once you gain some experience, a US employer may look at you. But you'd need to bring something special to the equation.

There is one exception, however: US digital media agencies are actively seeking foreign candidates to fill their tech spots. If you were willing to major in something that they have high demand for, and get the tech skills they need re: computer programming and etc., plus do a related tech internship in advertising while you study, then perhaps. But even then, you'd stand a better shot if you worked in the field in Australia first, then tried.
