Does anyone find that the type of advertising the NSPCC is upsetting? As I do.?

In the UK, the National Society For The Prevention Of Cruelty To Children (NSPCC) uses advertising that is upsetting, which features children on life support machines, or severely neglected, violently abused etc. They even had a cartoon like ad that featured a child being thrown down the stairs, landing on his head, and at the end of the ad, the picture changed to a little boy unconscious with a pool of blood around his head, they pulled the plug on that one though.... The thing is, I'm a parent to young children, and I absolutely hate these ads, as they upset me...We all know it goes on and we know it needs to be stamped out. But I think that they should tone their ads down a bit, and not show too much upsetting stuff. There must be other ways of advertising that doesn't upset people as much. Does any one agree with me on this? Shouldn't we have more severe penalties for child abuse, just to get the message across to the abusers? I'd give them a severe beating, %26amp; a long jail sentence

I hate it! And when they put it on during the childrens TV shows it drives me mad. The ads upset MY children, and that just winds me up big time. If they HAVE to show them, they should be after the watershed, or at least not scheduled during children's shows, there was one on during Milkshake the other day.

And I feel sorry for the children in them, they must get people seeing them in real life and thinking they've been abused.
Reply:Since having children I have no capacity for these ads or any tv programs showing child abuse/death. However as everyone else has said that is the point. Child abuse is upsetting and awful. if it didnt make you feel bad you wouldn't think about it, if no-one thought about it, then these children would have no chance of help. Life is full of good and bad - ignorning it doesnt make it go away. The ads aren't really about jail sentances, they are designed to make you think about child abuse as a whole, is the bruised kid next door being abused? Does the child in your class who doesnt speak have a bigger problem. Everyday people are faced with children they know are being abused but they do nothing about it, hoping it will just go away. Instead the child just goes away. Its not acceptable and that is what the FULL STOP campaign is about.
Reply:I agree but that is the point of the advertising campaign to bring awareness to the what happens to those poor kids.

I worry about that little boy in his dirty vest, crying for 'mama' you can see that hes upset, there's should be a warning 'no child was hurt or distressed during the making of this advert.
Reply:Firslty, longer senetences does nothing to prevent abusers. America has the death penalty and their murder rate is higher there.

Secondly, the campaign is abuot getting sorely needed funds. To help stop it, the best course of action is to give money to people trying to help. The best way for them to do this is to show shocking images. If it puts you off your dinner, imagine how bad it is for a poor kid to suffer this so I'm all for this way of adervtising.
Reply:I hate those adverts, they always make me want to cry especially the one where 'the little girl has an uncle that makes her do stuff she doesn't understand'.

Obviously they are using the shock factor but at the same time it is still very distressing.

Like I have said before, the government who keep moaning about over crowded prisons need to start building MORE prisons and stop giving a damn about the abusers rights.

Punishments nowadays do not fit the crime and too many abusers get away with it.
Reply:I know its upsetting, but I think it needs to be put across.

Im sure its more upsetting for the children that have to go through it than what it is for us to watch it.
Reply:Its meant to upset that is why they put them on - but be assured the children in the ads are not harmed - I too am a parent and Nanna and yes find them horrible - also I dont like the drink driving/smoking/cruelty to animals ads but they have to be hard hitting to make people sit up and notice
Reply:Its hard hitting thats the whole point. If you are that concerned you can complain to the advertising people. I dont like some of the drink and drive ads and I dont drink or drive! If thats what it takes to make a difference then surely its worth it?
