I would like to prepare for an advertising job interview and wanted to get a list of sample questions that are typically asked and would be good to prepare with. Any ideas?
What are some typical advertising job interview questions?
It depends , as you have not mentioned whether presently you are working or you are a fresher, in which field of advertising you are going to attend the interview.
Lets assume that you are a fresher and attending interview for client servicing. In this field the interviewer would like to see your communication capability, analysis on a particular idea and your confidence level. He also try to dig information on your understanding of the advertising business.
If you are fresher , you need to gather some information on the industry , the company with which you are attending interview their clients etc. Its no point talking about your education, your strengths %26amp; weaknesses. A real professioanl would spend some time to gather info so that in front of the interviewer he talks what the other person would like to listen.
Reply:Be prepared with the normal "what are your strengths, what are you weaknesses"
Also read up and pay attention to current events in the ad community (Adage.com, Adweek, ect..) a lot of agencies will ask what's your favorite campaign out right now and why? What campaign isn't cutting it and why?
Good luck!
Reply:Show me your portfolio.
Reply:The hardest thing to answer when I'm being interviewed is...:"Tell me about yourself." Be ready with a very positive statement to describe your major attributes." They also like to ask a lot of "what was your worst... "and "what was your best..".and "how did you handle...." and "what did you like most about your last job" "what did you like the least?" Whatever you do, answer everything honestly, but with a positive spin. Always be ready to tell them about problem you had and how you resolved it. Be positive, enthusiastic and energetic.
Reply:Aside from the typical interview questions, advertising may ask you other questions to guage your reaction, ability to think on your feet, and commiment to various parts of your career. Depending on the level you are interviewing for, be ready to talk about some magazines or books you read and different trade sources (Ad Age, Media, etc.,) Also, check up on the specific Ad Agency's website, specifically their mission statement and identity information. It is an agency's job to brand other companies so they take their own branding very seriously. They want to know how you can fit into the company's overall goals. If you have previous experience, be able to talk about the results for the client, the relationship with the client, reps, etc., Be able to spin the reason you are looking for a job positively. Brand yourself in the interview.
