Where can I find out data about Internet Advertising?

Where can I find out data which reveals which companies are making the most from internet advertising. I've checked Alexa but this is more about rankings.

I'm doing a thesis about virtual community advertising and want to see what sites like Facebook and Myspace make compared to search engine marketing and portals.

I need references (so it's no good just providing the figures - I need facts).

Where can I find out data about Internet Advertising?
From internet world stats http://www.internetworldstats.com/blog.h...

About the IAB

Founded in 1996, the Interactive Advertising Bureau (www.iab.net) represents over 300 leading interactive companies that actively engage in and support the sale of interactive advertising. IAB members are responsible for selling over 86% of online advertising in the United States. On behalf of its members, the IAB is dedicated to the continuing growth of the interactive advertising marketplace, of interactive’s share of total marketing spend, and of its members’ share of total marketing spend. The IAB evaluates and recommends standards and practices, fields interactive effectiveness research, and educates marketers, agencies, and media companies, as well as the wider business community, about the value of interactive advertising.

The IAB has six core objectives:

Fend off adverse legislation and regulation

Coalesce around market-making measurement guidelines and creative standards

Create common ground with customers to reduce costly friction in the supply chain

Share best practices that foster industry-wide growth

Generate industry-wide research and thought leadership that solidifies Interactive as a mainstream medium

Create countervailing force to balance power of other media, marketing, and agency trade groups
Reply:Funny, there's NOTHING in the link given in the best answer that gives the asker the data he needs Report It

Reply:Internet Advertising Bureau http://www.iab.net/ has data on online ad SPENDING, but NO DATA for specific companies' online ad REVENUES, which is what you are looking for.

I have not seen any organization compile and research this data, or even make estimates on the top ad earnings of companies. The reason maybe is that both public and private companies are doing online advertising, and private companies such as Facebook may not be as willing to give out data

At least with ecommerce sales, Internet Retailer magazine compiles the top 500 ecommerce sites, but not in the area of online advertising.

It's either you have to contact the companies directly and ask for this information; or do the estimations yourself; or change your thesis altogether due to difficulty or lack of any data
Reply:For $10 lifetime membership you could advertise to millions every single day. All you pay is $10 put in your advertisment and you're off see your balance grow by the day.

Reply:I am afriad you will really struggle to find this sort of information... most of the companies you are looking at are private so will have absolutley no inclination to put information like this out in the public domain. Why would they?!

Try corporate pages of the various sites you are looking at, if appropriate they might give details in their investor relations pages.

Beyond that - I would imagine your University will have resources you can use. Can you get access to any analysts reports? Or even some Market analysis companies (Datamonitor, Mintel etc. although I don't know if they cover internet advertising)....

As I say though, it may well be that the facts you seek are just not available - after all they are pretty commercially sensative for the companies involved!

If this provides the backbone to your thesis it might be worth reconsidering emphasis, particularly as you won't be able to generate anything similar yourself.

What is your thoughts on advertising?

These days, our TV is bombarded with commercials for everything from cars to hemorroid creams. Do you think that 60% commercials/40% TV programing is fair? What about billboards and magazine advertising?

What is your thoughts on advertising?
You're right, it doesn't seem fair, does it? But unfortunately it

is a necessary evil required in order to sell and promote

products. There is too much competition these days not to

advertise and try to convince the shopper of why they need

your product. It's the difference that makes a successful

business and one that fails.

I especially don't like to see page after page of it in mag-

azines, so I am more selective now with what I buy. Since

I don't plan to buy a magazine that is mostly ads, no matter

how many scented cologne papers I find among the pages.

When you consider how much an average ad may cost

these days, and multiply that by 'x' number of pages in most

magazines, you can get a little idea of how much money

these advertisers are paying the magazine to show their

products. And they complain about the cost of producing

their monthly magazines? I guess they think the buying public

is too naive.

The cost of advertising on TV is much more expensive

than on paper or billboards. And it is annoying to see so

many ads fill our screens every ten or maybe even more

minutes. But there doesn't seem to be any solution to

that, unless you totally watch the Public Broadcasting

channel that provides commercial free programming,

but does want your donation dollar instead.
Reply:TV ads suck big time!

Does anyone know about PPC advertising and does it really work or not?

i have an on line store that a have been promoting all over the net, mostly i do free advertising or primere listhing, but im thinking of trying ppc adv. but would like hear from

people how actualy have used it and seen resolts.

Does anyone know about PPC advertising and does it really work or not?
Pay Per Click advertising does work. I am a user of Google's adwords and I am able to track how many ad clicks turn into purchases on my ecommerce site. This means I can control exactly how much I spend per purchase, and I can be sure to spend way less than I make per transaction.
Reply:PPC advertising works great depending on the search engine and the industry that you are in. Obviously Google and Yahoo are the two best, but they can be pricey.
Reply:PPC advertising can be very effective if used correctly. As others have mentioned, Yahoo and Google are very pricey, but there are alternatives. CHoose a business or industry that is closely associated with your own, and approach them about adding a banner ad on their space. Not only will this help drive your traffi, but will also provide the website with additional funds.

specially when your target market can make the purchase online, you can easily measure your advertising performance.
Reply:It can work. Just be aware that you have to be conservative and try lots of options. Most importantly, you must do the work yourself.

Whatever you do, do not use the services of all-in-one companies that propose web design and ppc management. I tried using Webxites.com and they were a disaster. They probably spend $30 a month on ppc advertising, but were charging me $999.95 a month.

Whatever you do, stay away from Webxites. If you want to know more, look at their BBB rating. It is horrible. Not only do they have an amazingly high number of complaints, but they have been investigated for fraud.

Can anyone give me some examples of shock advertising?

I'm planning to do a research on shock advertising, but I have difficulties in searching for the examples other than Benetton, French Connection, and Calvin Klein. Can anyone give me some other examples of shock advertising? I prefer print ads though.

Thx in advance! =)

-- Talk about the influx of media holding companies buying up independent media management shops. How is this going to change the future (and how is it currently changing) the way advertisers buy media.
